WordPress recently turned 18 years old. And it’s been a wild ride. Back then, we didn’t have a proper CMS for PHP, let alone a blogging platform. The first release happened on May 27, 2003. It’s been nearly two decades years since then, and WordPress has changed a lot. In honor of the 18 glorious years, the EasyWP team pulled together some of the most interesting facts about the project’s history, origins, and future.

The team members at EasyWP are avid supporters of the now not-so-new block editor. When WordPress’s founder, Matt Mullenweg, announced that WordPress will finally be transitioning to the new editor at a WordCamp in 2017, the WordPress community was both excited and nervous.

Named in honor of the inventor of the printing press, Johannes Gutenberg, this new editor, Gutenberg, is a work-in-progress that promises to make WordPress easier to use, more flexible for content creators, and more accessible for readers. As more and more people discover the simplicity and ingenuity of Gutenberg, WordPress has affirmed its reputation as the backbone of the internet.
